HPHT stands for High Pressure High Temperature. The process recreates conditions associated with natural diamond formation by placing a small diamond seed with a carbon source inside specialised equipment.
Very high pressure and temperature allow carbon to crystallise around the seed. A metallic catalyst or flux is commonly involved in the growth process.
HPHT-grown diamonds can be colourless, near-colourless or produced in other colours depending on growth conditions and later treatment. Their internal characteristics may include metallic flux inclusions or growth features associated with the process, although these are not automatically visible without magnification.
